GRANIT  GRANITE

Granite is a plutonic rock formed deep in the earth as magma mixed with other rocks slowly cools. The minerals then crystallise in a certain order, first mica, followed by feldspar and finally quartz. Certain types of granite are the result of a fusion of the continental crust when two tectonic plates collide.

In certain parts of the world, South Africa (Zimbabwe Black), Brazil (Juparana, Giallo Veneziano, Azul Bahia), Australia (Adelaide Black), granite represents up to 75 % of exposed rock surface. We currently know of more than 500 different colours of granite.

Once simply polished, granite is now available in a number of finishes; flambé, brushed, leather-effect, bush-hammered, sanded, these new surfaces transform and modernise a material that has often been denigrated for its austere appearance.

The Atelier Contemporain presents a number of granites in its showroom, not least the Zimbabwe Black, which we regularly use to create work surfaces, playing on multiple finishes and larger dimensions.
